Sharjah is the workhorse of the UAE economy. While Dubai handles the headlines, Sharjah's industrial belt does the actual welding, machining, fabricating and re-exporting. That has a direct consequence for anyone shipping plywood across the Arabian Sea: the emirate's buyers do not want decorative panels or interior-grade boards. They want structural packing material that can take a CNC-machined oil-and-gas valve assembly through Khalid Port, onto a flat-rack, and across two oceans without flex or splinter. The Cochin Wood group has been supplying exactly that profile of material from Perumbavoor since 1986, and Sharjah is one of the more natural GCC destinations for our packing line because the buying patterns there match what our Kerala operations are tuned to produce.
Why Sharjah's industrial map matters for plywood
Most plywood suppliers chase the Dubai construction story. Sharjah is a different conversation. The emirate is built around manufacturing, re-export and heavy industry, which means crates, pallets and containerised cargo move in volume every day. If you are sourcing packing material for a Sharjah-based fabricator or a Free Zone trader, the question is rarely "what looks good" — it is "what survives a 1900 nautical mile sea leg plus inland trucking at the receiving end".
The free zones and estates that drive demand
- Hamriyah Free Zone (HFZ) — anchored around the Hamriyah Port complex on the Arabian Gulf coast. Heavy concentration of oil-and-gas service companies, steel fabrication, petrochemical packaging and maritime supply. Crates here tend to be heavy, dimensional, and built around irregular equipment shapes.
- Sharjah Airport International Free Zone (SAIF Zone) — adjacent to Sharjah International Airport. Skews toward electronics, aerospace components, automotive parts and lighter precision manufacturing. Smaller, cleaner crates and a lot of export-ready pallets.
- Sharjah Industrial Areas 1 through 18 — the older industrial estates around Al Sajaa and Industrial Area 13, 17 and 18 where local manufacturing, joinery, metal fabrication and SME-scale exporters operate.
- Hamriyah Port and Khalid Port — Khalid Port handles general cargo and container traffic close to Sharjah city; Hamriyah Port handles bulk, project and oil-and-gas cargo further north. Most plywood-packed shipments in and out flow through one of these two gateways.
That mix — heavy oil-and-gas equipment, light electronics, SME manufacturing and pure re-export traders — drives a very specific demand pattern for packing-grade plywood.
What we ship into Sharjah
The Cochin Wood group's packing line is built around the realities of export crating, not interior carpentry. Below are the products that move most consistently into Sharjah.
Packing-grade plywood (commercial / rubberwood core)
This is the workhorse SKU. Hardwood-faced, rubberwood or mixed-hardwood core, glued for moisture tolerance. We supply the standard packing thicknesses — 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 16mm and 18mm — in 8x4 sheets with options for cut sizes if your packing line wants pre-sized panels to reduce on-site waste. For Sharjah-bound consignments the 12mm and 15mm move most because they balance weight against rigidity for typical Free Zone crate sizes.
Okoume-faced plywood
Where the cargo is high-value — precision oil-and-gas instrumentation, aerospace components, automotive prototypes — buyers often specify Okoume face veneer on a packing-grade core. Cleaner face, lighter colour, better appearance for end-customer inspection at destination. We position Okoume as a face-veneer choice on top of the packing-grade core, not as a separate grade.
Heavy export crates and skids
We supply complete crates built to the cargo, not generic boxes. For Sharjah's oil-and-gas vertical that usually means heavy-duty bolted crates with internal bracing, ISPM-15 heat-treated dunnage, and skid bases sized for forklift entry from the long side. Wall panels are typically 12mm or 15mm packing-grade plywood depending on cargo weight.
Pallets
We build to the receiver's specification. Standard sizes that move into Sharjah include:
| Pallet type | Dimensions (mm) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Euro | 1200 x 800 | European-bound re-export from Sharjah Free Zones |
| ISO standard | 1200 x 1000 | General cargo, containerised LCL |
| GCC heavy | 1100 x 1100 | Intra-GCC trucking, heavy machinery |
| Custom | As specified | Oil-and-gas project cargo, irregular loads |
Container flooring
For exporters refurbishing or fitting out containers, we supply 28mm container-grade flooring panels in standard 20ft and 40ft sizes. This is a smaller line for us than crates and pallets, but it does move into Sharjah's container repair workshops.
Kochi to Sharjah — the route economics
Cochin Port to Khalid Port (Sharjah) is roughly 1900 nautical miles. Direct container services typically deliver in 7 to 10 days port-to-port, with weekly to fortnightly sailings depending on the line. Transhipment via Jebel Ali adds 2 to 4 days. For most packing-grade plywood orders the supply chain runs Perumbavoor factory → road haulage to Cochin Port → FCL or LCL container → Khalid Port → consignee yard in Hamriyah, SAIF Zone or Industrial Area.
A 20ft FCL holds roughly 550 to 600 sheets of 18mm packing ply, or proportionally more of thinner sheets. For heavy oil-and-gas buyers we often consolidate plywood sheets together with pre-built crate kits in the same container — the kit panels nest flat against the sheet stack and the receiving site assembles on demand.
Choosing the right grade for the load
A practical decision rule for Sharjah-bound packing:
- Standard packing-grade (commercial / rubberwood core, 12-15mm) — default for general fabricated steel, machinery sub-assemblies, automotive parts, electrical panels.
- Okoume-faced packing-grade (12-15mm) — when the cargo is high-value or when destination buyers inspect crates at receipt. Cleaner appearance, lighter colour.
- Shuttering plywood — relevant only if you are pouring concrete on site (Sharjah construction contractors). Not a packing product.
- Sawn hardwood (jackwood, rubberwood runners) — for skid bases, framing members, dunnage. Often shipped alongside the plywood load.
Common questions from Sharjah buyers
Do you supply ISPM-15 compliant material?
Yes. All wooden packaging components destined for export — dunnage, pallet runners, crate framing — are heat-treated and stamped to ISPM-15. Plywood itself is exempt from ISPM-15 because it is a manufactured wood product, but we provide the documentation that compliance officers in Sharjah typically ask for.
What is the minimum order to make a Kochi-Sharjah shipment economical?
FCL economics start to make sense at around half a 20ft container — roughly 250 to 300 sheets equivalent. Below that, LCL consolidation works but transit lengthens and per-sheet cost rises. We can quote both options once you share the load profile.
Can you ship cut-to-size panels instead of full sheets?
Yes. For larger orders we run cut lists in Perumbavoor and ship pre-sized panels stacked and strapped. This reduces on-site cutting waste in your Sharjah facility and cuts down on labour at the receiving end.
