Decision rules: packing grade vs Okoume vs shuttering
The wrong specification is the most expensive mistake in this trade. A quick filter for Mesaieed buyers:
- Use commercial / rubberwood packing-grade plywood when the crate is single-trip, the cargo is reasonably tolerant, and cost-per-square-foot matters. This covers the majority of fertilizer-line, general spares, and steel-mill ancillary shipments.
- Step up to Okoume-faced or BWR packing when the crate will be staged outdoors at Mesaieed for weeks, will see multiple handlings, or carries optical, electronic or precision-machined cargo that cannot afford moisture pickup. Most LNG and instrument shipments sit here.
- Use shuttering plywood only where the panel itself is the working surface — formwork for jetty extensions, civil works inside the estate, marine fabrication moulds — not for crating. It is overbuilt for packaging and underbuilt for some chemical exposures.
- Choose ISPM-15 hardwood pallets over plywood pallets for steel coils, aluminium extrusions, and any load over 1.5 tonnes static. Plywood-deck pallets work well for fertilizer bags and consumer goods, not for heavy industrials.
