Hosur is one of the few inland Indian cities where almost every truck rolling out of an industrial gate carries something packed in wood. The stretch from SIPCOT Phase I down to the Bengaluru-Krishnagiri NH-44 spine moves auto components, two-wheeler sub-assemblies, watch movements, machine tools, defense electronics and Caterpillar earth-moving spares — and every one of those loads needs a crate, a pallet or a plywood-decked container floor under it. That demand profile is exactly what our Kochi-based packing operation is built around, and Hosur sits on a clean 370 km trucking lane from us via NH-544 and NH-44.
The Hosur industrial picture
Hosur is not one estate, it is a corridor. Buyers placing plywood and crate orders typically sit in one of these belts:
- SIPCOT Hosur Phase I and Phase II — the original anchor estates housing TVS group units, Ashok Leyland's plant, Caterpillar India's earth-moving operation, Titan watches, and a dense ecosystem of Tier-1 and Tier-2 auto component suppliers feeding all of them.
- Mookandapalli, Bagalur Road and Belagondapalli industrial clusters — sheet-metal pressing, forging, plastic moulding and electronics assembly units that ship to Bengaluru OEMs every day.
- Thally Road / Berigai stretch — newer warehousing and contract-manufacturing capacity that has spilled over from Bengaluru and Whitefield as land there got expensive.
- Defense and aerospace electronics — a small but high-value pocket of vendors building boxed sub-assemblies that ship under ISPM-15 wood-packaging rules.
The packaging brief is fairly consistent across these segments: heavy, dimensionally awkward, often export-bound, and zero tolerance for moisture damage or pest rejection at a foreign port. That is a plywood problem, not a corrugated problem.
What we ship to Hosur
Most Hosur enquiries that land with us fall into four categories. Here is what we typically quote.
1. Packing-grade plywood (sheets)
This is the workhorse — commercial / rubberwood plywood used by crate fabricators and in-house packing shops in 6 mm up to 18 mm thicknesses. The standard Hosur sheet sizes are 8x4 ft and 7x4 ft, with 12 mm and 18 mm being the volume runners for auto-component crates. We ship ex-factory from Perumbavoor; GST and transport are extra. Buyers typically take a full truck (about 600-650 sheets of 12 mm) for a 9-11 hour transit straight into SIPCOT.
2. ISPM-15 stamped crates and cases
For export-bound shipments — particularly auto components heading to ASEAN and GCC, and electronics moving to Europe — the wood-packaging material must carry the ISPM-15 heat-treatment stamp. Crate construction we cut for the Hosur belt usually combines an 18 mm packing-ply skin over a hardwood (jackwood or rubberwood) battened frame, with corner reinforcements sized to the part being shipped. Engineering drawings or a sample part are enough for us to quote.
3. Wooden pallets
Standard sizes that move well in Hosur are 1200x1000 mm (the Euro-friendly footprint many auto OEMs default to) and 1200x800 mm. Two-way and four-way entry, hardwood deck boards over a stringer or block base. We also build heavy-duty pallets rated for 1.5-2 tonne static loads where forging units and machine-tool exporters need them.
4. Container flooring plywood
Less common but a real Hosur ask — 28 mm container-floor grade ply for buyers refurbishing reefers and dry containers, and for OEMs building purpose-fitted intermodal boxes. Quoted on spec, not a stock line.
Kochi to Hosur — the logistics
The route that works for most of our Hosur shipments:
- Distance: roughly 370 km from Perumbavoor / Kochi to SIPCOT Hosur
- Route: NH-544 from Kochi through Salem, then NH-44 north toward Krishnagiri and Hosur
- Transit: 9-11 hours on a single-driver run; an overnight despatch from us is typically unloading at the Hosur gate by mid-morning the next day
- Vehicle types: 32 ft single-axle and multi-axle trailers for full-truck plywood; container movements where the customer needs a sealed load
For buyers who prefer it, we can also route via Coimbatore-Salem-Krishnagiri (effectively the same NH-544/NH-44 spine). Cochin Port is in play only for export consignments where the Hosur shipper is exporting through Kochi rather than Chennai — a small but real share of our enquiries.
Which grade for which Hosur load
A practical rule we work with, after years of quoting this belt:
| Typical load | Recommended material | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Auto components, domestic dispatch (Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune) | 12-15 mm commercial packing ply on hardwood frame | Strength-to-cost optimum, no export grade premium needed |
| Auto / electronics export to ASEAN, GCC, EU | 15-18 mm packing ply, ISPM-15 stamped, hardwood battens | Phytosanitary compliance + handling-shock margin |
| High-value or sensitive electronics, defense sub-assemblies | Okoume-faced ply on selected panels | Cleaner finish, lower internal abrasion, premium presentation |
| Site-cast civil works, warehousing build-outs | Film-faced shuttering ply | Repeat-pour reusability, smooth concrete finish |
Okoume is a face-veneer option layered over our MR-packing or BWR construction — not a separate grade. When a Hosur exporter is presenting a crate at a foreign customer's receiving bay and wants it to look like a finished product, that is where Okoume earns its premium. For 90% of in-country auto-component movement, our standard commercial packing ply is the right answer and Okoume is overkill.
FAQ
What is your minimum order size for Hosur?
For packing-grade plywood we generally quote full-truck loads to Hosur to keep freight-per-sheet sensible — around 600-650 sheets of 12 mm or equivalent. Crate and pallet orders are quoted by job; even 100-200 units of a defined SKU is workable if drawings are clear.
Can you handle ISPM-15 stamping?
Yes. We supply heat-treated, ISPM-15 marked wood-packaging material where the buyer is exporting. The treatment certificate travels with the consignment.
What is the lead time from order confirmation?
Standard packing-grade plywood in volume runners (12 mm, 18 mm) typically dispatches within 5-7 working days of confirmation and advance. Custom crate jobs depend on drawings — usually 10-14 days for a first production run, faster on repeats. Hosur transit adds the 9-11 hour drive on top.
Getting a quote
The Cochin Wood group has been operating in Perumbavoor since 1986 — about forty years of plywood and packaging manufacturing in the same belt. If you are buying for a SIPCOT unit, a Mookandapalli supplier, or a Bagalur Road contract manufacturer and want a delivered Hosur price, send us thickness, sheet size, monthly quantity and the delivery pincode and we will come back with an ex-factory rate and a landed estimate. Use the request a quote page, and the resource hub has our material spec sheets, ISPM-15 notes and a crate-sizing primer for buyers building a packing brief from scratch.
